Why Breathability Matters in Arc Flash PPE

Breathability in Arc Flash Personal Protective Equipment

For an electrical worker, enduring Australia’s humid climate is hard enough, let alone the thought of putting on a heavy arc flash suit and gloves. However, whenever a piece of electrical equipment breaks down, no matter how hot it is, workers still need to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Following our official launch of ‘Elliotts Next Generation of Arc Flash PPE’, we would like to discuss another common issue that employees have with PPE— enduring the heat.

When a worker wears an arc flash suit, they are essentially putting on a necessary piece of clothing, often very heavy and restrictive, whilst undertaking a task that could potentially result in an arc flash. Considering that the worker will be wearing a heavy suit that is limiting, uncomfortable and extremely hot, creates added stress in a high-pressure scenario when the complete focus is needed. Even the most experienced electrical workers are at risk and completing a task in the heat makes it harder to concentrate. This means that workers are at a high degree of danger, should they not wear the right protective gear.

Elliotts PPE is Transforming Electrical PPE

For over 55 years, Elliotts have been innovating and designing new products to meet the needs of our customers. At Elliotts, we know the challenges that exist for electrical workers, and when we set out to change the arc flash PPE market, we designed our products to solve the problems associated with wearing electrical PPE.  We have taken into consideration feedback in regard to addressing the problem with improvements in weight, comfort and mobility.

Elliotts’ new X50 range has introduced a new lightweight system into the market to meet the need for a lighter, more comfortable suit with better mobility. In addition to this, we have added new ‘arc vents’ to general more airflow in our hoods.

Vented Lift-Front Hoods with “Arc Vents” Generate More Air-Flow

The Elliotts’ ArcSafe X50 Arc Flash Lift Front Switching Hood and ArcSafe X50 Arc Flash Switching Hood, both available with optional Arcvents. These Rear ArcVents can be added for additional ventilation, the release of heat and carbon dioxide and auditory communication improvement.
