Arc Flash Safety – Why Standards are Important

At Elliotts, We Take Standards Seriously When It Comes To Arc Flash Protection

Elliotts manufacture and customise a large range of industry specific ArcFlash, Arc Rated Protective Clothing for the Australasian Market. Wearing ArcFlash specific flame resistant clothing provides the necessary thermal protection to shield workers from an Arc Flash. In many cases, this PPE can mean the difference between a minor accident and a tragic fatality.

Our New Range

For over 50 years, Elliotts has been innovating and designing new products to meet the needs of our customers. Anthony Elliott, Managing Director of Elliotts, explained that “we spent two years researching and testing many different fabrics and fabric combinations before finally arriving at the ArcSafe X50.”  The ArcSafe® X50 range is the next generation of Arc Flash PPE designed on maximising protection, but not compromising wearer comfort.  This new, state-of-the-art range has been heavily tested and certified by world-leading independent third parties.

Elliotts and have seen countless cheap imports and unreliable products flood the market, putting workers at risk. Anthony stated “At Elliotts’ we have always ensured our fabrics and fabric assemblies are tested but also that our completed garments are also tested. Our hoods and garments are tested by ArcWear at Kinectrics High Current Laboratory in Canada.”

Standards & Testing of Arc X50 Range

Elliotts prides itself on investing heavily in product testing and certification by world-leading independent third parties.

“Most manufacturers use test reports supplied by fabric manufacturers, make up a garment and call it an arc flash suit. Independent third-party testing of, not only fabrics, but garments and hoods provides the wearer with the confidence that the PPE will provide the protection it claims” said Anthony.

The ArcSafe® X50 Range of garments have been tested to the following standards:

  • ASTM F2178-08 Standard Test Method for Determining the Arc Rating and Standard Specification for Face Protective Products.
  • ASTM F2621-19 Standard Practice for Determining Response Characteristics and Design Integrity of Arc Rated Finished Products in an Electric Arc Exposure.
  • IEC 61482-1-2 – Box Testing Class 2
  • AS4602.1:2011 High Visibility Safety Garments: Garments for high risk application

The ArcSafe® X50 Fabric Ensemble has been independently tested by Kinectrics to:

  • ASTM F1506 Standards for Flame Resistant Fabrics – ASTM F1506
  • IEC 61482-1 Method A – Fabrics

The ArcSafe® X50 Performance Results:

  • Arc Rating: ATPV – 52cal/cm; PPE4 (HRC4)
  • IEC 61482-1-2 Box Testing – Class 2
  • AS4602.1:2011 – Class D or D/N

How important is wearing the right equipment?

Elliotts’ quality Personal Protective Clothing (PPC) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are proven on-the-job every day. These reliable and popular products are part of a comprehensive range evolved over time and based on the common foundation of quality and care for which the company has built its reputation.

Remember, Personal Protective Equipment is the last line of defence – not the first – against many industry hazards and is most effective when applied correctly to the hierarchy of controls and strategies implemented by workplaces to protect their workers.
