Bhopal: At a time when the disastrous second wave of the coronavirus pandemic has started to recede in the country, a shocking case of gross violation of COVID-19 protocols has come to light from Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district, where used COVID-19 safety gears were being allegedly washed for resale, a purported video of which has surfaced on social media.
According to a report by News 18, the video purportedly shows used personal protective equipment (PPE) suits, gloves and face masks being manually washed at a bio-medical waste disposal unit in Barkheda village in Satna district. In the video, unit workers, wearing face masks, were seen washing PPE suits, gloves and masks, to allegedly ready them for sale in the market. Furthermore, some bundles were seen kept nearby.
As per government guidelines, COVID-19 safety gears, after being used, should be disposed off safely and shouldn’t be reused. After the video purportedly showing COVID-19 safety gears being washed at the waste disposal unit started doing rounds on social media, the Satna district collector directed the sub-district magistrate to probe the matter.
The district administration has handed over the probe to the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board. Speaking to News 18, SDM Rajesh Shahi said a team visited the bio-medical waste disposal plant to conduct inquiries. Suitable action will be initiated if ‘resale’ allegations are found to be true, the SDM added.
In another incident, three men — Nagraj Pilla, Rohit Kothari and Mohammad Nigar Shaikh — were arrested in April last year for allegedly storing used face masks worth more than Rs 50 lakh in Vasai town Palghar district of Maharashtra.
Police said that 25,000 used N-95 masks worth Rs 51.34 lakh were seized from a house in Vasai’s Gadgapada area. The used masks were allegedly washed, ironed and packed in boxes for sale in the market, they added.
